Music in Kilkenny presents J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion performed by the Irish Baroque Orchestra

St. Matthew Passion - Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
Revived by Felix Mendelssohn in Berlin in 1829 more than eighty years after its first performance in Leipzig in 1742 Johann Sebastian Bach’s setting of the St. Matthew Passion is widely regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces of classical sacred music. Written for double choir, double orchestra and soloist who represent various characters e.g. commentator (soprano), Evangelist (tenor), Christ (bass), Peter (bass), Judas (bass) - almost in the form of an opera.
For this performance the Olivier Award winning Irish Baroque Orchestra perform on ‘period’ instruments.

Mater Dei HS Singers from USA and Airneán

Join us in this magnificent Cathedral in the heart of Kilkenny for a fabulous concert and help a local charity. Donation to Teac Tom very welcome!
Based in Santa Ana, California, the Mater Dei High School Choral and Vocal Program serves a diverse Southern California community.
Airneán, a lower voice Irish folk group set up at the beginning of last year, consists of current and past members of Maynooth University Chamber Choir.

A Choral Extravaganza

The Kilkenny Choir is conducted by musical director, Patrick Rafter and accompanied by an orchestra comprising of some of Ireland’s leading instrumentalists. We are delighted to present one of Ireland’s finest mezzo-sopranos, Sharon Carty.
